English: Frontispiece of the book “Von dem Mißbrauch Heißer und hitziger Speisen und Geträncke, Sonderlich aber Des Caffes, Schockolate und Thees” by Scottish-French physician Daniel Duncan (1649–1735), published in Leipzig in 1707. This is in fact a German translation of his work “Avis salutaire à tout le monde contre l'abus des choses chaudes, et particulièrement du café, du chocolat, et du thé” (Rotterdam, 1705). The picture shows four ladies enjoying the hot drinks chocolate, coffee, and tea, as can be seen in the inscription on the cupboard. The inscription under the picture is a German rhyme; translated roughly thus: Even if we drink ourselves to death, at least it’s done after the latest fashion. Deutsch: Titelkupfer des Buchs „Von dem Mißbrauch Heißer und hitziger Speisen und Geträncke, Sonderlich aber Des Caffes, Schockolate und Thees“ des schottisch-französischen Arztes Daniel Duncan (1649–1735), erschienen 1707 in Leipzig. Es handelt sich um die deutsche Übersetzung seines Werkes „Avis salutaire à tout le monde contre l'abus des choses chaudes, et particulièrement du café, du chocolat, et du thé“ (Rotterdam, 1705). Das Bild zeigt vier Damen, welche die heißen Getränke Schokolade, Kaffee und Tee genießen, wie man der Beschriftung auf dem Wandregal entnehmen kann. |
