Description
English: Heavy winds across the Sahara Desert lifted a massive amount of sand and dust in early August 2017, creating a massive sandstorm that spread over parts of Mali, Mauritania, and Algeria. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite on August 5.

Most of the sand and dust hovers over Algeria and is so extremely thick that it completely obscures the ground from view over several hundred miles. The layer of brown dust lies lower in the atmosphere than the white clouds which are seen in the lower right section of the image. Shadows from the clouds can be seen on the dust layer.

The Sahara Desert is a near-uninterrupted band of sand and scrubland that stretches across the northern third of Africa, and almost four-fifths of the country of Algeria belongs to the Sahara. Strong winds, which drive sand and dust storms, are common in the region, making such storms one of the primary natural hazards of the region.
