Description
English: Heavy clouds of dust poured off of western Africa on December 21, 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of the dust storm that same day. The camel-colored dust blew from Western Sahara (north), Mauritania (center), and Senegal. Small banks of clouds sit over Senegal. Dust storms are a major natural hazard West Africa. Africa is the world’s largest source of dust to the atmosphere, contributing about 70 percent of the global total. The dust from the world’s deserts, which is primarily mineral in origin, delivers nutrients to the land and ocean while also impacting the atmosphere and climate.
