Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gusting winds blew plumes of dust across southern Patagonia, Argentina in the opening days of December 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this striking true-color image on December 1.

While point sources are not completely obvious in this image, one of the more northerly tan plumes of dust appears to originate near the dark blue Lake Musters. The broad veil of dust in the south originates further inland, east of several bright blue glacial lakes. The dust is being driven generally eastward over the Atlantic Ocean while clouds float above the lower-level dust.

Dust storms are not unusual in southern Argentina, where fine sand, glacial flour (loess), and dried salt lakes can easily be lofted by strong winds and blown for hundreds of kilometers. Wind gusts were reported over 30 mph (32.2 km/h) on December 1 at Comodoro Rivadavia, a city located on the San Jorge Gulf. The city appears to lie in or near the path of the northernmost dust plume in this image.
