Title |
ESS-95BA13 Roman Adlocutio applied disc brooch |
||
Description |
English: Roman copper alloy Adlocutio applied disc brooch. The brooch is copper alloy with a damaged and incomplete thin repousse plate. Only the lower half of the plate survies, however a large amount of the design is visible. A mounted figure is advancing toward three standard bearers. The horses forelegs are raised, and the main body of the horse is covered by a circular shield (For a more complete example of this design see Hattatt (1987) Brooches of Antiquity, page 193 plate 1 no 1080b). The reverse has a complete sprung pin and catchplate. The brooch has a diameter of 32mm and it weighs 9.08 grams. It has an even mid-green patina. The reverse of the brooch is in good condition. The main body of the brooch is slightly bent, and there are a few breaks around the rim. |
