Title
ESS-C67D67 Medieval sword pommel
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy type VIII ‘Wheel-type’ pommel, dating from the 14th to 15th century. The pommel is sub-circular in plan, with a flattened upper and lower edge. In cross section it is an elongated octagon. Both surfaces are flat, with a central cast trefoil motif (possibly a clover leaf). The surfaces then point inward at a 45 degree angle, before flattening off to a plain band around the circumference of the pommel. There is a large rectangular slot in the base of the pommel, with a smaller rectangular slot on the opposing side, where the sword hilt would have been attached. The pommel is hollow. It has a mid-green patina and there are traces of a white metal coating on the surface. It is 43.60mm long, 46.47mm wide, 26.32mm thick and weighs 130.69 grams. See London Museum Medieval Catalogue (1967) p22.
