Title
Ear;y medieval strap end
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 750 to AD 1100). The strap end is sub-triangular in plan with slightly bulging sides and made up of two pieces of sheet copper alloy soldered together. There are two circular perforations at the straight end of the triangle and these go through both sheets of copper alloy. Below the perforations is a semi-circular curve with a half-diamond point within the curve pointing towards the perforations. This design has been infilled with a white substance, possibly the remains of silver wire. Below the enamelling on the main portion of the face is a broadly rectangular panel which may have been fileld with two parallel rectangles of niello and silver wire that are now missing. Below this is an incised horizontal line. Towards the pointed terminal of the strap end is a further L-shaped setting which, again, may have held niello and siver wire, now missing. The back of the strap end is undecorated. The surface of the strap end has a light green patina.

The strap end can be classified as a Thomas's Class A: Type 5. The overall dimensions are as follows: 44.4mm in length, 11.23mm in width, 2.6mm in thickness and 5.72g in weight.
