Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Ansate Brooch. Drwaing: Frank Basford
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy ansate brooch of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. AD 700 - c. AD 850). Length: 33.1mm; width: 17.1mm; thickness: 5.6mm; weight: 4.46g.

Viewed from the front, the brooch has parallel sides and viewed from the side the terminals are vertical. The bow is strongly arched forming a sub-triangular shape. At the front there are four pairs of decorative horizontal grooves, one pair above the bow, one pair below the bow and a pair at each terminal end. There is also a small curving groove just above and below the centre of the bow, at the front. A pair of pin-lugs at the rear contain the corroded remains of a copper alloy axis bar for a hinged pin (now missing). The rear of the brooch, excepting the bow, is slightly concave. Only a small portion of the catch-plate survives and this is situated to one side.

The brooch has a dark brown patina overall. There is no evidence for any melting or burning.

This brooch can be classified as a Hübener Group 9 type.

A close parallel for this highly arched example of an ansate brooch is from Riby Cross Roads, Lincolnshire (Archaeological Journal, vol. 151, 1994, p. 264 - 6, illn. 16 1). However the Riby Cross brooch has different decoration on the bow and the catch-plate is horizontal rather than vertical.
