Title
Early-Medieval buckle pin. Drawing: Frank Basford
Description
English: Cast copper alloy buckle pin with in the past has been known as a shield on tongue type. Length 37.5mm, width 18mm and 18mm thick. The shaft is sub-triangular in section and curves sharply downwards at an angle of about 90 degrees. Wear is evident on the underside of the shaft where the pin was in contact with the outer edge of the frame. There is a deposit of iron corrosion in the area where the pin loop adjoined the pin plate. All surfaces are tinned. However, the pin is possibly made of bronze with a high tin content. Similar buckles were found at Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, Anglo Saxon cemetery during the nineteenth century. See Arnold 1982.
