Title
Early-medieval : Square-headed Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy square-headed brooch of Early-medieval date. All that remains of the brooch is the worn foot plate.

The foot plate is decorated with chip carved Style I decoration consisting of abstract zoomorphic decoration and further indistinct decorative elements. Ring and dot decoration is present on some raised element and gilding remains on the front surface of the foot.
From the reverse of the foot the worn remains of a catchplate project.
The metal has a bright green patina and survives in good condition despite heavy wear around the edges. The brooch fragment is 39.1mm long, 29.9mm wide, 11.2mm thick and weighs 15.6g.

Square headed brooches originated in Scandinavia in the 5th century and spread to Britain and Continental Europe towards the end of the 5th century (Rogers, p.119).

This is possibly part of the same brooch as YORYM-2CF506.
