Title
Early-medieval : Wrist clasp
Description
English: Catch-piece from a copper-alloy wrist-clasp, a T-shaped plate with high-relief decoration in Style I inside an undecorated raised linear border. The Style I appears to be a single animal in profile. The catch is a rectangular loop which sits at the centre of the long arm of the T. On the underside of the terminals the remains of the rounded lugs for attachment can still be seen, but they have largely been removed by breaks. They would have been pierced so that they can be sewn into place. This wrist clasp can be dated by its art broadly to the 6th century AD.

A similar set of wrist-clasps was found in grave 360 at Morning Thorpe, Norfolk. Hines identified it as a Class C, but commented in 1993 that 'The clasps from Morningthorpe g.360 (Fig. 142) are quite unique, and without any datable associations.' (Hines 1993, 73).

Update: this very small group has now been joined by another member, NLM-F98055, from Wickenby in Lincolnshire.
