Title
Early-medieval mount: harness stud
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy mount or stud dating to the early medieval period, probably 6th to 7th century AD. The mount is circular in plan with cast Salin Style II interlaced detracted zoomorphic designs around a central pellet and ring (possibly an animal's eye). The upper surface of the mount has been gilded. The reverse of the mount has the remains of three intergrally cast studs set equidistantly around the edge of the mount.

Simlar objects have been recorded on the PAS database including CAM-758D07, BH-EA77E7, BERK-F72627, BERK-18B795 and BUC-24D6. The three integral studs on the reverse are similar to those on a mount in The Ashmolean and the decoration is similar to that on a saucer brooch, both dated 5th - 6th century (MacGregor and Bolick 1993: 53 no. 47.6 and 241 no. 24.9 respectively). These objects are likely to be decorative mounts for straps or horse harnesses.
