Title
Early-medieval supporting-arm brooch
Description
English: Copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch; head-plate and bow carinated, reverse of head-plate retains side-lugs for missing axis-bar and pin, gently curving bow with flat reverse; pair of transverse grooves above foot; foot slightly expanded, squared-off at terminal, catch-plate set to one side on reverse of foot with deep profile; as Hattatt no. 1308A. Early 5th-century form of brooch with origins in N. Germany and the Low Countries.

This brooch is 24mm wide and so falls into the gap between the wider Mahndorf (25mm plus) and the narrower Perlberg (up to 22mm wide) types, as defined by Evison (1977) following Böhme (1974). The proportions of the narrow foot, however, suggest that it should be identified as a Perlberg type.
