Title
Early Bronze Age flat axehead, close up of damage.
Description
English: Early Bronze Age flat axehead. Cast copper alloy or, more likely, copper. In plan the axe is sub-triangular and in profile the axe expands very gradually and slightly towards the middle. Undecorated, and with no side flanges or stop bevel. The butt end is rounded, and the sides are flat and very slightly concave. The tips of the curved blade are slightly damaged, and the edge bevel & cutting edge do not survive. There is a shallow scratch on one surface, starting as a notch close to the left hand corner of the blade, and running roughly one third of the way up the axe - this damage was probably sustained in antiquity. No bare metal exposed. Pitted, orange-brown with some mid green patina; no invasive corrosion. Length 89.57mm, width at cutting edge 55.67mm, width at butt end 29.4mm, maximum thickness 10.1mm (roughly at centre, between blade & butt ends), thickness at butt end c.5.4mm, thickness at blade end c.5mm, weight 175.7g. Flat axes are among the earliest metal finds found, and this example, with no flanges or stop bevel, is the earliest type of flat axe.
