Early Medieval: Incomplete strap distributor or bridle fitting |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy strap distributor or harness fitting, of Early Medieval dating (10th to 11th Century AD)
Around 50% of the strap distributor is present, consisting of a lozenge terminal and the central roundel. The lozenge terminal has circular knops on each corner. The central void has been filled with iron corrosion products. In the centre, there is a raised convex roundel with a circular indentation as well as rounded knobs to either side. On the reverse, a circular depression is located behind the central raised roundel. It measures 48.7 mm in length, 28.2 mm wide and 10.1 mm thick. It weighs 23.6 g. The strap distributor is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Several similar strap distributors have been recorded on the PAS database, including: WMID-9BCCB5; CORN-3E8125 and WMID-061CE4. All are considered to be Early Medieval (10th to 11th Century AD) in dating. |
