Title
Early Medieval, mount, style 1
Description
English: Early, Early Medieval, gilt, cast copper alloy mount decorated with two Anglo-Saxon Style I animals and glass inlay. The mount is square with a central inset containing a piece of what appears to be degraded red glass. Around this are two animals, their oval eyes at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock. These are set within two curved bands, one of three, the other of two, strands, the end of one three-strand band appears to turn at 90 degrees. The animals' bodies consist of three-strand bars, they have long necks each with a foot springing from the point where it joins the body. Below the body is a pear-shaped hip, the end of which turns back to form a two-toed foot. Over the hip is a tail formed from two strands which join before a comma-like curl. The animals are set within a plain frame, a similar frame surrounding the glass setting. Through one edge of the mount are two, 3.0mm diameter rivets, the underside of the mount is plain but bears some copper alloy corrosion products. In its centre is a scar which might suggest that the glass setting penetrates the thickness of the mount. Length 25.0mm, Width 25.0mm, Thickness 2.0/2.2mm, Mass 6 grams
