Title |
Early Medieval - Medieval pottery shelly ware rim sherd |
||
Description |
English: An Early Medieval - Medieval pottery rim sherd from a shelly ware cooking jar (11th century). The cooking jar has a squared rim, with flattened top and slight ridge along the upper, outer edge – possibly providing the seating for a lid. The fabric is oxidised on the external and internal surfaces with a pale grey core. There are frequent shell, mica and grog inclusions; the shell is partially burnt out. On the rim is a patch of soot and evidence of burning. The radius of the rim is approximately 75mm.
Dimensions: weight: 41.57g. Identified by Meriel Jeater, Museum of London Curator and Medieval and Post Medieval pottery specialist. |
