Title
Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian sword pommel
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy sword pommel of Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian date, c. 900-1100.

The pommel has a base that crecentic base that curves towards the outer edges, with five rounded lobes that increase in size towards the centre. The central lobe has a sub-rectangular-shaped perforation on its outer face, through which tang of the sword would have originally passed. The pommel is mostly hollow. There are no rivets on the pommel, which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang.

This is a sword pommel of late Early-Medieval date and of probable Viking/Anglo-Scandinavian origin. It belongs to Petersen's (1919) L type VI pommels, a fusion of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian fashions, it dates from the 10th or 11th century.
