Title
Early Medieval Class B Type 1 Styliform Strap End
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy early medieval/late Anglo-Saxon/Viking (AD c.750-c.1100) styliform strap end, missing the tip of its terminal and the end of the attachment end. Overall, the strap end measures 47.3mm long, 7.2mm wide and 3.0mm thick. It weighs 2.46g. The strap end is very worn but appears to be a Thomas (2004) Class B Type 1, distinguished by its zoomorphic terminal, the decorative transverse grooves and its overall shape. At the incomplete attachment end, the strap end slightly narrows to a rectangular strip. Here the decoration survives better than on the rest of the object and it is possible see two pairs of transverse grooves, one at either end of the rectangular strip. Between the two pairs of grooves are two raised rectangles separated by a longitudinal groove. Below the lower pair of grooves the strap end widens slightly then tapers gradually towards the terminal. The decoration on this part of the strap end is almost completely worn away, but the slight bulge in width and thickness at the terminal suggests that there was a zoomorphic terminal, in the shape of an animal's head.
