Title |
Early Medieval Mount ILLUSTRATION by J. Gibbons |
||
Description |
English: Early Anglo Saxon gilt copper alloy mount, cast in the form of a helmeted head. The horns of the helmet are conjoined at their bird-headed terminals and perforated between the two beaks for a missing rivet. The curve of both horns is followed and emphasised by twin grooves. The worn cap of the helmet has traces of horizontal grooves and is pierced by a separate copper alloy rivet, broken on the reverse. The face is very worn, with slight indications of eyes and a moustache, and its outer edge is set within a bordering ridge. Both ends of the drooping moustache project beyond the outline of the face and appear to be offset towards the base, on the reverse of which is an integral rivet with its end burred-over to form a rove. The object measures 17 x 25mm. |
