Early Medieval Small Long Brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) small long brooch (AD c.500-c.600), missing its bow, its foot, its pin and parts of its top and side knops. Overall, the fragment measures 17.8mm long, 22.1mm wide and 6.3mm thick. It weighs 4.51g. All that survives is the head of the brooch. It is broadly rectangular and flat with rectangular projecting knops or lappets at the top and sides. These are decorated with an outer border of ring-and-dots. On the centre of the reverse is the hinge for the pin. Only the stump of the pin survives (a relatively recent break) and iron corrosion on either side suggests that the hinge bar was made of iron.
