Early Medieval Tweezers
Description
English: Middle Saxon copper alloy tweezers. Cast, D-sectioned loop with notch-like mouldings on either side defining the beginning of the narrow arms which expand to wide, triangular terminals with in-turned blades. Incised lines follow the edge of the arms and blades, with a row of ten ring-and-dots on each arm and three rows of six, five and five ring-and-dots on one terminal and seven, six and six ring and dots on the other. A wire ring with twisted end-knots is secured to the loop.

Similar examples have been found at Hamwic (Hinton, 1996, 45, fig18, no.38/40 and 258/102) and Flixborough (Evans and Loveluck, 2009, 31, fig.1.12, no.215 and 220/221).

External diameter of wire ring 19mm. Length of tweezers 78mm. Width at blades 20mm. 8th - 9th century.
