Title
Early Medieval great square headed brooch (fragm)
Description
English:  A copper-alloy fragment of an Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) square headed brooch, dating to AD 450-550. It is the bow of the brooch. It is C-shaped in profile and bears a fragment of the head-plate on its upper edge. The latter fragment has a transverse band, which has an oval mask with recessed circular eyes at the centre, and two scroll motifs on the sides. The long outer edges of the bow are raised and it has two longitudinal deep flutes on the front; these are divided by a central rib. The rib has two longitudinal grooves on its front face, which define a cental ridge. The flutes are decorated with a pair of longitudinal lines of recessed dots. The back face of the bow has a central longitudinal flute, while at its top edge there are two semicircular pierced lugs; one of them is blocked by unclear material, possibly a fragment of the axis bar. The front face bears traces of gilding.
