Title
Early Medieval strap end
Description
English: A very corroded fragment of an Early Medieval to Medieval copper-alloy zoomorphic strap-end or mount.

The upper face of the object is moulded with zoomorphic decoration depicting an animal head at the terminal. This head has a long snout with a pronounced bulbous tip. The snout widens slightly along its length with two eyes and two ears clearly depicted. The object is broken just behind the ears and the remaining part is missing. There is a single, corroded, iron rivet through the bulbous tip of the snout. The rear face is flat.

It is possible that this is part of a Thomas Class B strap end (c. 750-1100), similar to FRG Datasheet 32: 4, fig. 2, but the corrosion makes identification uncertain and the terminal rivet may point instead to this being an 11th- to 12th-century mount, possibly a box mount.
