Title |
Early Medieval strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: An Early Medieval cast, copper-alloy strap fitting. It consists of two, rectangular, opposing strips with rounded top corners and two circular attachment holes, one above the other. The lower hole retains its dome-headed, copper-alloy rivet. The two attachment strips extend into a loop at the bottom which is thicker and more D shaped in section. There is considerable wear on the lower, inner surface of the loop where something has been suspended from it, probably a ring. There are traces of gilding in places. The fitting would have allowed a 5mm thick piece of leather or fabric to sit between the plates.
Similar strap loop fittings have been dated to the late Early Medieval period such as three examples that were found in Flixborough and dated to the 9th century. |
