Title |
Early Modern Fob Seal |
||
Description |
English: A corroded cast copper-alloy gilt fob seal of probable late Post Medieval to early Modern date (c. AD 1700-1850). The seal is formed of a hemispherical, flat in section loop, with additional circular attachment hoop topped by rounded knop. From the loop extends an oval frame with three ridges around the circumference, within which a hemispherical in section domed copper-alloy fitting sits. This is decorated with a series of linear striations extending from the centre to the exterior edges of the oval, and contains the glass seal. The seal depicts a draped female in classical style, leaning on an anchor. This artefact has a mid-green corrosion patina where the gilt has been lost. A similar example is depicted in Read (1988: 139, fig.1) dating to the late 18th-19th century. |
