Title
Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch in the three dimensional shape of a swimming bird, possibly a duck or swan, dated from AD 100-200. The main part of the brooch is oval in plan and convex/hollow in section, and the oval body of the duck tapers slightly towards the tail end. The oval body consists of a moulded flat central piece, representing the body and tail of the bird, and a piercing through the tail probably served as a head loop. On either side of the body are two grooves with two wings (one on either side) below. The integral neck is situated at the front end of the body and is raised up and arched forwards with the beak pointing down. On the underside of the brooch are two parallel semi-circular lugs, located at the tail-end of the brooch, set at right angles to the main part of the brooch. These lugs would have held the axis bar, spring and pin all of which are now missing and appear to be old brakes. At the head end of the brooch is the semi-circular catchplate. Surface condition good with a dark green patina and traces of tin have survived on the body of the bird. Length 34.72mm, width 13.72mm, weight 4.9g. A parallel can be found in Mills, N. 2000. Celtic and Roman Artefacts. Greenlight Publishing, p. 58, RB147.
