Title |
Early medieval finger ring |
||
Description |
English: Silver finger-ring consisting of a rectangular sheet of silver 1mm thick. The two ends of this sheet taper sharply to form wire, circular in cross-section, which are twisted around each other and back around themselves to form a flat knot. The outward face of the sheet is decorated with 8 longditudinal rows of small rectangular indentations, which cease when the sheet begins to taper into wire. The rows are grouped into pairs with undecorated bands between. The inside face is smooth and undecorated. The finger-ring is now slightly out of shape, as it has been crushed; it is 27mm in length and 16mm in width. This finger-ring is early medieval, probably dating to the late 9th or 10th century; similar rings are known from Viking-age sites across the Scandinavian world.
Surface metal analysis at the British Museum indicated a silver content of c. 92%. TAR 2002, no. 52. |
