Title
Early medieval mount; bird mount
Description
English: Early medieval mount; cast copper alloy mount in the shape of a three-dimensional bird, probably dating from the middle Saxon period. There is a suggestion that this may be the head of a bird-headed pin, although it is rather larger than would usually be expected for this function. The bird is in a seated position with its wings folded over its back, crossed over slightly at the end. The head is simple and round with a circular indent on either side for the eyes. These may have been settings for glass, enamel or similar. Length 40.1mm, width 11.3mm, thickness (base to back) 10.6mm, weight 16.14g
