Title |
Early medieval small-long brooch |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of an Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper alloy small-long brooch, dated around AD 500-600. Only the head and the bow of the brooch survive. The head of the brooch is slightly curved probably due to plough damage, and all the edges of the head plate have been broken off, apart from where the plate is attached to the bow of the brooch. The reverse of the head shows remains of what was most likely the hinge, although the hinge is incomplete. The bow has been broken off at the bottom, but displays part of a transverse ridge. There is also a transverse ridge at the top of the bow where it is attached to the head plate. The bow is curved and triangular in cross-section. The bow has a central, longitudinal ridge. The bow is undecorated. Overall, the brooch measures 30.26mm in length, 19.75mm in width, 13.01mm in thickness, and 6.90g in weight. |
