Title |
Early medieval to medieval prick spur |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper alloy and iron early medieval to medieval probable composite prick spur (AD c. 1050 - c. 1150). It is formed from a copper alloy cone with fluted sides creating a septfoil cross-section. A corroded iron shank projects from the base. The pointed terminal of the cone is broken revealing the interior to be hollow. The copper alloy part features some decoration. Two of the seven longitudinal grooves are decorated with an incised zigzag line and two of the ridges that flank the grooves are decorated with transverse grooves.
Several objects of similar construction on this database are identified as Roman studs or mounts, for example NMS 37A803. However, the object resembles the goad of a composite prick spur of 11th - 12th century date, e.g. HAMP-7660EC and SUR-301C41. The object may have had a long iron point projecting from the pointed end of the cone. The object is 18 mm long and has a diameter of 11 mm at the base. It weighs 6.40 g. |
