Title
Early medieval weight (close up of coin)
Description
English: A complete early medieval lead weight with a Roman coin or early medieval styca embedded in the upper surface (AD c.850-c.1100).

The weight is circular in plan and broadly D-shaped in cross-section. The sides of the weight are convex, tapering towards the top and slightly towards the base. The base is slightly concave. The upper surface is flattened and there is a circular depression at the top of the object, set slightly off centre, with a diameter of approximately 13 mm. Within this depression is set a copper alloy coin with the obverse side showing. The coin shows a bust right with a triangular shape in front of the face that could be a letter. The crudeness of the design suggests it is a contemporary copy of a Roman radiate or nummus, but it may be an early medieval styca instead. There is evidence of post depositional damage on the surface, in the form of scratches and indents. Apart from the coin set into the upper surface, the object is not decorated.

The object measures 35.8 mm in diameter and is 24.4 mm thick. It weighs 201.7 g (7.11 oz).

The object is a mid grey to brown in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

Several weights have been recorded on the PAS database that have coins embedded in them: <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/212701" title="View details for LIN-956197">LIN-956197</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/429817" title="View details for SWYOR-D00CF2">SWYOR-D00CF2</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/571863" title="View details for NMS-0D47D0">NMS-0D47D0</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/408657" title="View details for LVPL-5E4310">LVPL-5E4310</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/404044" title="View details for LIN-3DFD27">LIN-3DFD27</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/267331" title="View details for YORYM-6AC476">YORYM-6AC476</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/230780" title="View details for YORYM-01F580">YORYM-01F580</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/203823" title="View details for YORYM-8054B2">YORYM-8054B2</a>.
