Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On December 14, 2020, as the skies over southeastern South America darkened from a stunning solar eclipse, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite captured view of Moon’s shadow as it travelled eastward over Argentina and the South Pacific Ocean. The shadow cast by the eclipse consists of the completely darkened umbra and the partially shadowed penumbra. The penumbra appears golden brown and the umbra appears black.

The path of totality of the first and only total solar eclipse of 2020 stretched from the equatorial Pacific Ocean to the South Atlantic Ocean, passing through southern Argentina and Chile. This path spanned about 56 miles (9.7 km) in width and anyone at the centerline of that path experienced roughly 2 minutes and 10 seconds of totality, weather permitting. Outside of this path, a partial solar eclipse could be viewed in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

This image is a mosaic, created by data collected as Aqua passed over the region at three different times. Aqua has a polar orbit and the MODIS sensor collects imagery in swaths that are roughly 2,330 kilometers (1,450 miles) wide. Only the center swatch captures the rapidly passing eclipse in totality.
