Description Practically none of the E. coli O157:H7 strains ferment D-sorbitol or do so very slowly; about 80% of other strains do ferment it. Colonies of E. coli O157 are colorless on Sorbitol MacConkey (SMAC) agar plates, while non-O157 E. coli colonies are pink.
