English: El Paso Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico form a combined metropolitan area with a population of over 2 million, with Juarez accounting for 2/3. The Rio Grande River separates the two cities and two countries. In 1598, Don Juan de Onate was the first European explorer to arrive at the present site of El Paso. The city of Juarez was founded in 1659 as an agricultural outpost. American settlers began to stay for good only after the Mexican-American War in 1849. El Paso was eventually incorporated in 1873. The image was acquired May 24, 2008, covers an area of 45 x 48 km, and is located near 31.6 degrees north latitude, 106.4 degrees west longitude.
