Español: Esta infografía ilustra el espectro de la energía electromagnética, destacando específicamente las porciones detectadas por los telescopios espaciales Hubble, Spitzer y James Webb de la NASA. La porción del espectro marcada como “visible”, con los colores del arcoíris, es lo que los humanos detectamos como luz visible. Más allá del extremo rojo del espectro visible, las longitudes de onda son más largas de lo que el ojo humano puede detectar. La porción del espectro inmediatamente más allá del rojo se llama infrarrojo. Los humanos podemos sentir la energía infrarroja como calor. Cada uno de estos telescopios detecta porciones del espectro infrarrojo y, las y los astrónomos pueden analizar estos datos, esencialmente haciendo visible lo invisible. Las longitudes de onda más largas como el infrarrojo, las microondas y las ondas de radio pueden pasar a través de áreas de densas nubes de gas y otra materia en el universo donde las pequeñas ondas quedan atrapadas. Al detectar estas longitudes de onda más largas con telescopios, podemos ver cosas en el universo que nunca podríamos ver en luz visible. La infografía demuestra los rangos del espectro electromagnético que cada uno de estos telescopios cubre y también su cobertura combinada. Hay otros telescopios que detectan otras porciones del espectro electromagnético, y juntos estos instrumentos científicos nos dan una idea más completa sobre el universo y cómo funciona.
