English: Multiplr elephants are carved at the base of Kailasa Temple.
The Kailasa temple (Cave 16) is the largest of the 34 caves. It is dated 8th century C.E. The 32-metre high temple was built by digging out of basalt hill. Ellora caves are monuments dating from A.D. 600 to 1000, These 34 monasteries and temples, devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, The 12 Buddhist caves date from about 200 BCE to 600 CE, the 17 Hindu temples 500CE to 900 CE, and the 5 Jain temples about 800CE to 1000CE.
