- It is certain, however that the first shipments of skins were sold by private treaty, and only in 1671 do we find the following entries in the Company's [Hudson's Bay Company] minute book:
- On the 14th November:
- That Mr. Rastel take care to putt up publick bills the Exchange to morow morneing for sale of li. 3000 weight of beaver coats and skins at Mr. Garaway's Coffee house upon tuesday the 5th Xber at two a clocke afternoon according to former orders made the 24th of october and 7 of november and yt Mr. Ely with the advies of Mr. Parham dee forth-with put the sayd beaver into thirty Letter fitt for sale .
- On the 21st November:
- That the publike sale formerly apointed to be on the 5th of december next. shall be deferred unto 24th of January next.
- These dates are according to the old style calendar, the legal year then commencing on the 25th March. Not until 1750 under George II was it ordained that the year should begin on the 1st January next.
- Thus, by our reckening, the Hudson's Bay Company's first Public Auction was hold on 24th January, 1672 but it seems it was not a great commercial success as not more than 769 lbs. of the merchandise offered were sold.
