English: Portrait of Empress Wilhelmine Amalia (1673-1742)
Italiano: Ritratto di Guglielmina Amalia di Hannover imperatrice d'Austria. Il dipinto, entrato in Museo insieme all'ovale che ritrae Ercole III d'Este e ritenuto inizialmente il ritratto della moglie morganatica del duca, Chiara Marini, è stato reso noto da Gabriella Guandalini (1980), che ha correttamente identificato il personaggio riconoscendovi la fisionomia di Amalia Guglielmina di Brunswick. La principessa, sorella di Carlotta Felicità di Brunswick (nel 1695 moglie di Rinaldo I d'Este), sposò il futuro imperatore d'Austria, Giuseppe, nel 1699 con una cerimonia celebrata per procura a Modena, dove la duchessa soggiornava dal 1697 e dove furono eseguiti due ritratti commissionati dall'imperatore a Jan Frans Douven. I colori "raffinati, brillanti e freddi, sotto una luce ferma, senza vibrazioni"- esaltati dal restauro che ha reso più netti i trapassi luministici - sostengono l'attribuzione ad un ignoto ritrattista nordico formulata dalla Guandalini; la studiosa riporta anche il suggerimento di Alheidis von Rohr che orienta verso il pittore tedesco Andreas Scheits (Amburgo, 1665 circa - Hannover, 1735); un'ipotesi non ancora compiutamente vagliata. L'opera è stata esposta nel 1980 a Modena.
