| Description | Built in the Hellenistic period along the great harbor of Ephesus, this street was renamed Arcadian Street during the Roman period, prior to 100AD, after being renovated by Roman Emperor Arcadius. The street is approximately 530 meters long and 10 meters wide, and was lined with shops and warehouses, and featured streetlights, underground water and sewer pipes, and featured many large, grand gates along its length. The street was abandoned after the harbor of Ephesus silted up and the city depopulated in the Byzantine period. The remains of the street have been excavated. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. |
