Lacaune
November 8, 1918
Darlingest Mamma,
I must send you a word tonight though words are pretty nigh impossible this day of rejoicing. Think of it being on your birthday, if not officially, at least actually, as far as we now know.
How can any of us ever realize it. So long have I tried to imagine what it would feel [page 2] like to have the day come when there would be no [crossed out: fighting] more death – when one could think only of the great Silence on the front – And now that it’s here, or on the eve of realization, how can one grasp it –
People are just stunned here, and can’t believe. They can only weep silently and remain dumb. At Paris, it must be different. And at home!
[page 3] Oh, to be with you –
Your picture has heather and late asters around it, and the nice old “Econome” searched Lacaune to find some white chrysanthemums for me because it was your birthday. One of the boys, one of my dearest, said that he had wanted (of his own accord) to write you a letter, but having been off at the farm all day digging potatoes, hadn’t been able to. So you see how we’ve all thought of you today and celebrated in the midst of the[this?] joy that can’t be celebrated outwardly.
My heart overflowing with birthday love and thankfulness that we all could be alive and together in spirit for this Day of Days, and know together the realization [crossed out: of] that Right and Justice and Love have triumphed over all the horror and loss,
Your lovingest,
Bun
