O pequeno templo dedicado a Nossa Senhora do Socorro, situado à entrada da povoação do Carvalhal, foi mandado edificar em 1574 por Salvador Gil e sua mulher Bárbara Henriques, segundo indica uma inscrição gravada na lápide tumular colocada na capela-mor. O conjunto da ermida é formado por dois corpos distintos, correspondentes à nave e à capela-mor, que formam planimetria rectangular, aos quais se adossam do lado direito a sacristia. O edifício é precedido por uma galilé de planta quadrangular com arcos duplos, rematada por uma cúpula. A simplicidade do espaço exterior contrasta com a riqueza do interior, onde se destacam as linhas estruturais maneiristas, de gosto erudito, e a decoração barroca, patente no programa azulejar e nas pinturas ornamentais. Os espaços da nave, única, e da capela-mor são cobertos por abóbada de caixotões ornamentados com pinturas, estando as paredes do templo cobertas com painéis de azulejo alusivos à Vida da Virgem, colocados na capela cerca de 1733 a expensas da povoação do Carvalhal (Inventário Artístico de Portugal, 2000). Na capela-mor foi colocado um retábulo pétreo, de modelo maneirista, que alberga a imagem de pedra de Nossa Senhora do Socorro, executada no século XVII (Idem, ibidem).
