Description

Esta estátua, inaugurada na passagem de ano de 2008 para 2009, da autoria do Mestre José Rodrigues, foi uma forma da Câmara Municipal homenagear Caramuru, figura épica vianense intimamente ligada à História da fundação do Brasil.

Caramuru, ou Diogo Álvares Correia, natural de Viana do Castelo, foi um destemido navegador que naufragou na Bahia de Todos os Santos, no Brasil, em 1508, e que está intimamente ligado à história daquele país. Quando, a seguir ao naufrágio, usou a sua arma de fogo e matou um pássaro, surpreendeu de tal modo os índios que estes lhe atribuíram poderes divinos. Casou depois com a filha do chefe da tribo Tupinambá, Paraguaçu, tendo depois tido grande influência quer na miscigenação que caracteriza a nação brasileira quer no acolhimento dos portugueses em terras de Vera Cruz. <a href="http://www.guiasdeviagens.com/index.php?title=Viana_do_Castelo_-_O_centro_da_cidade_de_viana_do_castelo" rel="nofollow">www.guiasdeviagens.com/index.php?title=Viana_do_Castelo_-...</a>
