Description

Designed by Robert Esnault-Pelterie, the REP Type D was powered by a 60hp engine and broke several records towards the end of 1910. It was later ordered by the French Army and mass produced. This original example has a diamond-shaped fuselage which probably makes it the prototype. If so, it is this machine in which Pierre-Marie Bournique flew a distance of 330 miles in 6 hours 29 minutes on 31st December 1910. On display in the Pioneers Hall, its uncovered frame makes it difficult to photograph clearly from many angles, but it is a fascinating exhibit nonetheless. Musée de l'air et de l'espace.
