Title
FINGER RING
Description
English:

Post Medieval gold finger ring with a “posy” inscription on the outer side.  Rectangular in cross section. Broad flat band with double raised borders above and below the inscription: + LOVE x AND x LYVE in Roman capitals. Slightly squashed with an indent on one side and some small scratches.

Dimensions: The ring is 21.6 mm in external diameter, 6.4 mm wide, 1.1 mm thick and weighs 3.57 g.

Discussion:  In general Roman capitals began to be used in posy ring from the middle of the 16th century to the second quarter of the 17th century, when they were replaced by Italics (Oman 1974, 40-41).

A similar finger ring with raised borders and style of inscription but different posy can be found in Oman 1974, p. 111, 58, I. Another parallel recorded as Treasure is KENT-D3BBB0, 2010 T102 (Jackson 2010). Similar examples in silver-gilt and with more decoration on the upper and lower border are relatively commonly reported through the Treasure process see, for example SWYOR-F5ABF6, 2011 T613 (Downes 2011) and also AF.1383 in the British Museum collections which is dated to the 16th to 17th century.
