| Description | Such antennas rotate on several mountains of the Swiss Alps. They are used for the military and data from one station for civil air surveillance, and for the coordination of both. It is the successor system to the FLORIDA facility and in operation since 2004. Each of these plants is capable to make all battle management decisions, in case the air operations center or other systems might be eliminated. An entire unit consists of the communication system KOMSYS, the radarstation FLORES, the warning message system LUNAS-EZ, and the Military-Civil Airspace Management System MICAMS. Officially, the locations are classified. But for technical reasons (accessibility / supply), they are installed on mountains which are developed for tourism. For this reason, they remain not unnoticed. The antennas can be moved down into a pit and sealed with a cover (when the wind speed is not too high). Switzerland, Jan 27, 2011. |
