| Description | The Fairey Delta FD2 at the RAF Museum, Cosford, 8 July 2020. It was the first aircraft in the world to reach and exceed 1,000mph when it broke the world air speed record in 1955 by reaching 1,132 mph. The attempt was totally on the initiative of Fairy and had no support whatsoever from the government. The achievement stunned the USA and France which reconsidered their fighter designs as a result (the Mirage was said to be inspired by the FD 2). Unfortunately, Fairey's proposed development of the FD 2 as a fighter - the FD3 - was never built as the government saw no future in manned fighters at the time! The infamous1957 Defence Review thought all future wars would be fought by guided missiles. As a result, Fairey built no more aircraft. |
