Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas in Spanish) sit in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 400 miles (600 kilometers) east of Argentina and 850 miles (1,350 kilometers) north of the Antarctic Circle. More than 200 islands are found in this territory of the United Kingdom, but just two large islands—East Falkland and West Falkland—comprise the bulk of the Connecticut-sized landmass.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the Falkland Islands on October 20, 2021.

The sunny spring day showed the tan-colored, nearly treeless landscape of East Falkland and West Falkland. The rocky, hilly, and undulating terrain of the islands are primarily coated in grassland and heath, with some boggy lowlands. With a cool, moist climate and steady strong winds sweeping the islands, agriculture tends more towards growing livestock than growing crops. Over 90 percent of the land is used for permanent pastureland, with sheep and cattle dominating the region. The small population clusters around the capitol city of Stanley, which is located in a sheltered coastline on the east side of East Falkland.
