Female kākā eating a food pellet at a feeder station

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Female kākā eating a food pellet at a feeder station. Male and female kākā are difficult to differentiate: males tend to be bigger, with a bigger mandible, and rounder head; females tend to be smaller and may have a prominent yellow eye ring during breeding. However, there is a large degree of overlap so genetic testing or breeding behaviour is usually necessary to be sure. This banded bird is a known female discerned from breeding behaviour.
