Title
Figure of Christ: DEV-OCE774
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy crucifixion figurine of Jesus in the Romanesque style. The figurine was probably attached to a wooden crucifix, and dates to around the twelfth century AD. It is unusual in that the position of the head is different to other similar documented crucifix figurines. Jesus's head is angled to his left, wheras on other examples, his head is angled to his right. The head, body and loincloth have been intricately detailed, and there are traces of gilding on the surface. The ribs and stomach have been accentuated to portray Jesus's emaciation and suffering. A stone (probably glass but possibly a garnet) remains intact for the left eye; presumably there was also one on the right eye, which is now missing. The hands are also missing. The style suggests that it was made on the continent. Geoff Egan has pointed out that the figurine is similar, but not identical to, those featured on p. 148-149 of Romanische Bronzekreuzifixe, by P. Bloch.
